Prepare to step into the world of space exploration and Martian conquest with robots – prepare for an extraordinary journey to the enigmatic landscapes of Mars, as DPASTRO 2024 takes on the enthralling theme, “A Journey on Planet Mars.” This year’s Olympiad promises a breathtaking experience that transports both participants and audiences to the very heart of Space and Mars exploration (the Martian exploration) where the participants’ unmanned robot rovers must navigate through the rocky obstacle-filled landscape mirroring the challenges faced by real Martian rovers like  Robot Curiosity and Robot Perseverance rovers on Mars. Speed, Obstacle avoidance and Maneuvering accuracy are of the essence. So buckle up!.

-> Just So you know: ‘Martian’ means anything (or being) related to or inhabited in planet Mars.

Planet Mars - The Red Planet

Planet Mars (also called “The Red Planet” ) which is approximately 0.000038 light-years(or approximately 54.6 million kilometers – the closest in recent times according to NASA)  is one of the most explored bodies in our solar system, and it’s the only planet where man has sent robot rovers to roam the alien landscape. Mars was named by the Romans for their god of war because its reddish color was reminiscent of blood while the Egyptians called it “Her Desher,” meaning “the red one.” Planet Mars has its red color because of the iron mineral deposit in the Martian dirt iron oxide, or rust which causes the surface of Mars to look red. Currently, the Red Planet is not habitable by humans for various reasons like radiation, months of travel, thin atmosphere e.t.c but several researches show that it could be home to humans in the near future, which is why scientists, engineers and astronauts have continued to send robots there to gather valuable insight, make more findings, research and study in order to make Mars a home to humans one day.

The Challenge

These robots having been sent and are roaming the environment of Mars, they are faced with several challenges the planet has to offer. While there are many factors responsible for the problems these robot rovers encounter, some of the major challenges these robots have to deal with on Mars are: Obstacle avoidance and Maneuvering which affects their Speed of execution of the tasks for which they were sent to the Planet for. The Martian landscape is characterized by rocky outcrops, unique geological formations that bear testament to the planet’s turbulent history. Composed primarily of basalt, these rocky features are obstacles to navigate coupled with sources of scientific fascination and as the robot rovers traverse the terrain of Mars they must avoid these obstacles and have good precision with maneuvering. Mars has mountains and canyons like Earth, but they can be much bigger. In fact the tallest Martian mountain is called ‘Olympus Mons’. It is three times taller than Mount Everest. It is the tallest known mountain in our whole solar system.

Imagine yourself standing on the Martian surface, a world bathed in hues of rust-red and ochre. The Martian soil, a distinctive and otherworldly shade, stretches as far as the eye can see. As participants and their robots venture onto the DPASTRO ’24 competition field, they will encounter this reddish obstacle filled terrain, offering a realistic glimpse into the challenges faced by actual rovers on the rocky terrain on Mars. These rocky formations are not mere visual elements; they are formidable challenges and objects of scientific interest. The rocky terrain in DPASTRO ’24 closely mimics the Martian geology, allowing participants to explore the complexities of rocky Martian landscapes just as real rovers do. And as participants’ robot rover go through this Martian-like terrain, they will encounter rocky outcrops and uneven surfaces that demand precision and skill in obstacle avoidance.

Obstacle avoidance in the terrain of Mars presents participants with a multifaceted challenge. Their robot rovers must carefully maneuver, ensuring that they can navigate around and over the obstacle outcrops without getting stuck or losing control. The precision required is akin to the challenges faced by real Mars rovers, which must autonomously assess their surroundings and make split-second decisions to avoid obstacles. Participants must program their robots to detect and react to obstacles in real-time, using sensors. Obstacle avoidance is not only about ensuring the safety and functionality of the robot rovers but also about successfully collecting valuable data and conducting scientific experiments.

Maneuvering  the rocky terrain of Mars demands the highest level of precision and adaptability from participants’ robot rovers. Participants must program their robots to maneuver with a great level of precision using navigation algorithms to make split-second decisions. This precision mirrors the capabilities of real Mars rovers, which are equipped with advanced sensors and autonomous systems. Participants must take into account the nature of the obstacle they encounter, which can vary in size, shape, and composition. Some rocks/obstacle may be small and easily navigable, while others could be larger and more challenging to circumvent. The ability of the robots are put to the test as they navigate the rocky terrain. They must adjust their movements based on the size and position of obstacles, much like real rovers adapt to unexpected challenges on Mars.

The Speed at which the robots make right decisions contributes positively to a great extent as they traverse the challenging environment of Mars. Rovers should be able to respond quickly to any threat or hazard. Moreover, since the robots are being powered by a source of energy which is limited, they can’t afford to waste time while performing tasks.

Participants will learn the importance of robotics engineering and programming in achieving successful obstacle avoidance, maneuvering and speed.

– Eligibility:
This year’s DPASTRO is open to schools or teams in Nigeria with students in senior secondary school (SS1 – SS3 or grades that relates to this) within the age group of 12 – 17 years. Make sure your team fits the eligibility criteria before registering.

– Registration Platform and Period:
The registration period for our robotics competition is now open!. To register, please visit our dedicated Olympiad link at https://daerobotics.com/dpastro24/. This platform will guide you through the registration process and provide all the information you need to get started. You can register your teams from 3rd November 2023 to 15th March 2024. Be sure to mark these dates on your calendar so you don’t miss out.

– Registration Process:
To register for the competition, follow these steps:
1. Visit https://daerobotics.com/dpastro24/.
2. Select the type of team registration. For School teams, use the “One team” or “Two teams per school”. For teams not under school authority use the “Independent Team”.
3. Complete the online registration form.
4. Pay the registration fee.
5. Submit the required documentation.

– Registration Fees:
There is a registration fee of N49,999(One Team per School), N94,999(Two Teams per School) and N54,999(Independent Team). Payment of this registration fee provides you access to digitized contents, learning support and competition equipment. This fee also helps cover the administrative cost. Please ensure that payment is made in a timely manner.

– Required Documentation:
During the registration process, you will need to provide the following documentation:
School contact details
Team member names, Junior WAEC Cerificate and contact information.
Emergency contact information
Other relevant information as specified during registration

– Confirmation and Acceptance:
Once you’ve successfully registered, you’ll receive a confirmation email acknowledging your registration. This email will contain details of your registration.

– Teams and Team Composition:
A school Team is a team under a school body or authority. An Independent Team is a team not under a school body or authority. A school is allowed a maximum of two different teams with designated team names. Two teams per school only increases the chance of your school coming out as the winner. A Team should consist of 2 to 4 members. Roles within the team can include programmers, builders, and designers. Only one mentor or coach is allowed per team.

– Equipment and Materials:
Competition equipment, materials and robot would be provided to teams for both learning support, practice and the competition usage and would be returned on the competition day after usage.  

– Student Learning Support and Code of Conduct:
Upon registration, participants would have access to learning support. Learning support comes in form of learning materials, Ebooks, online tutorials from our instructors. On specific occasions, tutorials may be physical for teams within schools. Early registration increases duration of preparation and learning support. Learning support will be done in an integrated form with teams and their coaches/mentors. We have established a code of conduct to ensure a respectful and fair competition environment. Please review the code of conduct to understand the expected behavior and consequences for violations.

– Competition Schedule:
The competition will take place on 23rd of May 2024. The schedule includes practice rounds, qualifiers, and finals. Detailed timing and venue information will be provided closer to the event.

Code of Conduct

1. Sportsmanship and Respect: Treat all participants, organizers, and volunteers with respect and courtesy. Good sportsmanship is expected at all times.

2. Fair Play: Follow the rules of the competition without attempting to gain an unfair advantage. Cheating will not be tolerated.

3. Teamwork: Promote teamwork and collaboration within your team and with other teams. Encourage a spirit of cooperation.

4. Safety: Prioritize safety above all else. Ensure that your robot is designed and operated in a way that does not pose a risk to participants, spectators, or event staff.

5. Equipment and Materials: Use only approved equipment, materials, and software for the competition. Unauthorized or prohibited items are not allowed.

6. Adherence to Schedule: Respect the competition schedule and deadlines. Be punctual for practice rounds, qualifiers, and finals.

7. Good Conduct:  Maintain a positive and respectful attitude. Avoid using offensive language, gestures, or any behavior that may be disruptive or offensive.

8. Conflict Resolution: Address conflicts or disputes through peaceful and constructive means. Report any issues to event organizers for resolution.

9. Mentor and Coach Involvement: Mentors and coaches should guide and support the teams but not take over the tasks that should be performed by the students.

10. Use of Personal Devices: During competition rounds, students should refrain from using personal electronic devices unless specifically allowed by the competition rules.

11. Respect for Property: Treat the competition venue, equipment, and materials with care and respect. Any intentional damage may result in disqualification.

12. Compliance with Judges’ Decisions: Accept and adhere to the decisions made by the judges, even if you disagree. Respect their authority in determining the outcomes.

13. Alcohol and Drug Policy: The consumption of alcohol or illegal drugs at the competition venue is strictly prohibited.

14. Dress Code: Dress appropriately for the event. While comfort is important, attire should be respectful and safe.

15. Environmental Responsibility: Help maintain a clean and environmentally responsible competition venue by disposing of trash properly and using resources efficiently.

16. Reporting Violations: If you witness a violation of the code of conduct or rules, report it to the event organizers or a designated authority.

17. Consequences of Violations: Violations of the code of conduct may result in penalties, warnings, or disqualification, depending on the severity of the offense
